Introducing ATLANTIC ARTHOUSE

Kindly note our progress:

ATLANTIC ARTHOUSE is a powerful creative merge between two creative minds, two women-led brands, both committed to elevating understanding of and appreciation for contemporary art from the Caribbean Mid-Atlantic: Atlantic World Art Fair and Toukan-Arthouse.

ATLANTIC ARTHOUSE launches December 7-10, 2023 at Villa Paula, in Little Haiti, Miami.

Carefully selected artworks from various gallery partners and artists will be presented as a curated group show throughout the whole villa, thus enhancing the visitor experience with a meaningful narrative, instead of the traditional compartmentalized approach of an art fair providing one booth per gallery.

This first iteration of ATLANTIC ARTHOUSE will explore a contemporary interpretation of “THE OPEN BOAT”, a text by philosopher and poet Édouard Glissant from Martinique.

The transatlantic journey on the ocean, through the door of no return, ends not in an abyss of totality; rather, this open sea beckons our freedom in our contemporary moment, encourages us to be courageous, to express, to create. Because we can. Because we must. Glissant demands this courage. His understanding of the human condition is timeless. This curated fair exhibition emphasizes this understanding of the human condition.

In addition, a live program will be presented by TOUT-MONDE Art FOUNDATION which will deepen our understanding for the region. All our welcome. Join ATLANTIC ARTHOUSE as we embark on this exciting journey of “The Open Boat”.

About Lisa Howie, AWAF Founding Director

Lisa Howie is a cultural entrepreneur, consultant, curator and writer. Following her tenures in education and museum leadership, she launched Black Pony Gallery in 2019 on the Artsy platform, featuring contemporary artists from the Atlantic World. To augment her vision for mid-Atlantic, contemporary Caribbean art, she spearheaded the Atlantic World Art Fair in 2021, also on Artsy. In 2022, Ms. Howie co-curated artwork in all rooms of the Cambridge Beaches Hotel, Bermuda and in 2023 opened her gallery in the hotel’s reception area. Bank of Butterfield, Bermuda also features her curatorial vision with artwork in the main branch and throughout the bank. Alongside work with corporate and private clients, Ms. Howie leads art experiences at the Hamilton Princess Hotel, Bermuda, supports the education program at the National Museum of Bermuda, and serves as a Board Director with the Centennial Bermuda Foundation. She is a member of the International Biennial Association, the Museum Association of the Caribbean and the Association of Women in the Arts.

ANNOUNCEMENT ARTIST RESIDENCY

Atlantic World Art Fair is thrilled to partner with Miami's Fountainhead Arts, an arts organization that empowers artists to build a better future. Founded in 2008 by collectors Kathryn and Dan Mikesell, Fountainhead operates a residency program that invites domestic and international artists to live and work in Miami for one month.

Both the Atlantic World Art Fair and Fountainhead Arts are committed to elevating the practices and careers of contemporary artists. This new partnership begins with one artist, Curtis Santiago, chosen from the 2022 AWAF, to complete a residency in October 2023. The artist chosen from the 2023 AWAF is to be determined.

Fountainhead’s approach empowers artists by making connections that lead to growth in their work and careers, providing time and space to experiment and challenge their practice, and mentorship and business skills to help them lead thriving careers. To date, the program has supported over 1,000 artists from 47 different countries, many from the Atlantic/Caribbean region, while playing a critical role in nurturing Miami's cultural ecosystem.
